DEX Ecosystem: Translating Complex Data Networks into a Premium Brand Motion System.
Client: Hakuhodo Singapore & DEX (Wholly-owned subsidiary of IMDA Singapore).

1. The Challenge
Mapping the Abstract
- I was handed a stack of abstract data infrastructure charts from an industry I knew nothing about. It was dense, technical overload.
- Instead of getting bogged down in the mechanics, we worked backward and focused entirely on the Why before touching the How.
- We forced ourselves to use the simplest whiteboard drawings and raw sketches to map out the core system before even thinking about style frames.
Defining the Motion Language
- I joined the project right after the early pre-production phase when style references were loosely set and a few technical explainer shots for Video 1 were already soft-locked.
- My job was to step in and engineer the overarching visual system and motion language for the DEX brand universe.
- I needed to design a cohesive, scalable system that started from the microscopic data elements and built up to full macro, industry-wide networks.
The Structural Strategy
- We split both films into a two-part timeline to give the abstract concept a natural story arc.
- The first part is tailored to the distinct chaos of each video, visualizing disjointed file formats and network traffic jams.
- The second part functions as a unified resolution system where all data shapes streamline and lock into the clean DEX framework.
2. Visual System: Video 1 (SGBuildex)
Framing the Construction Industry Pain Point
- The request for the first video was specific: the visual language needed to feel rigid, blocky, and technical to resonate with the built environment industry.
- The baseline concept was information mapping—taking small data bits that pack into bytes, which then scramble out to different stakeholders and destinations.
- The current ecosystem felt like an inefficient logistics route: taking a train to one neighborhood for one material, a motorbike to a completely different area for another, and a cab somewhere else for the rest.
- DEX needed to represent the ultimate shortcut—a centralized highway where all traffic passes through a unified processing gate, allowing stakeholders to access everything from a single source.
Engineering the Building Blocks
- We started with a cube. It is the definitive SaaS visual trope, but it works perfectly here because the construction industry reads it as a physical brick.
- To avoid overly abstract visuals, we designed a series of distinct cube silhouettes—full blocks, hollowed units, and U-shapes—to visually represent the messiness and variety of raw data types.
- We grouped these cubes into recognizable file formats (like Excel and PDFs used across the built sector) that felt organized but still retained a layer of inherent clutter.
- This was a nod to structural reality—the built industry suffers from the same lack of file organization and messy naming conventions as the creative industry.
- These loose formats clumped together into giant information silos, creating a high-rise slum of data that looks visually compelling on screen but functions terribly for extraction.
3. Visual System: Video 2 (DEX Brand)
Reimagining Network Traffic
- Video 2 focuses entirely on transaction speeds, sorting pipelines, and network data delivery rather than static file formats.
- The core narrative problem shifted: no matter how fast a digital pipeline runs, the manual human stakeholder remains the ultimate system bottleneck.
- To create a complete contrast with the rigid grid system of the first video, I moved away from the standard data-as-a-cube route and drew inspiration from pinball machines and ball mazes.
- We switched the core geometry to spheres, representing information fluidly rolling through intricate kinetic networks.
- Each participant in the ecosystem is designed as a mechanical node that physically relays, receives, and processes these rolling spheres.
- Making these nodes behave mechanically rather than digitally exposed the system's flaw—it looks beautiful to watch, but it slows down to a crawl under heavy data loads.
The Scale Shift
- The visual tone before the data highway takes over is vast, highly complex, and chaotic.
- To emphasize the transition to the base product, we introduced a massive scale shift where the DEX gate appears as an imposing, geometric structure descending from above.
- Instead of over-explaining the tech, we kept the motion straightforward and satisfying—the monolith acts as a literal vacuum gate, drawing the scattered spheres into organized, hyper-speed paths.
4. The Unified Resolution
The Voxel Data Highway
- Once the data passes through the gate in either video, the visual languages converge into a singular, high-speed voxel highway system.
- Chaotic shapes and irregular file textures instantly clean up, aligning into continuous, uniform traffic streams traveling along parallel tracks.
- The camera tracks this data momentum through a clean terminal interface, scales out to a laptop viewport on a physical workbench, and expands into macro city structures forming the broader global network.
5. Campaign Evolution - Christmas (2024)
For the 2024 Christmas campaign, Leben was placed within a series of festive environments, including winter landscapes and interior retail spaces.
The visual direction explored a more expressive tone, incorporating colour-shifting and psychedelic patterns to enhance the sense of magic and immersion within the brand world.
The campaign also introduced a secondary character, expanding the narrative while maintaining consistency within the visual system.
Existing brand assets, such as a previously developed Christmas tree design, were re-integrated to ensure continuity across campaigns.
6. System Thinking & Brand Consistency
Across multiple campaigns, Leben functioned as a scalable visual system rather than a static design.
The character maintained a consistent identity while adapting to different environments, narratives, and levels of abstraction.
This approach ensured long-term usability across retail, digital, and campaign contexts, reinforcing brand recognition while allowing creative flexibility.
7. Final Output
A unified visual system that extends across campaigns, environments, and formats, supporting Braun Büffel’s brand identity through a flexible and recognisable character.
